I nodded.
“My husband says this baby isn’t his.”
The doctor didn’t look surprised.
She didn’t judge me either.
She simply asked me to lie down.
The cold gel touched my belly, making me shiver slightly.
The screen lit up.
I held my breath.
At first, there was only a blurry shadow.
Then a tiny dot appeared.
Then that sound filled the room.
A heartbeat.
Strong.
Rapid.
Alive.
I covered my mouth with my hand, and tears immediately spilled down my face.
“Hello, my love,” I whispered.
Dr. Salinas smiled faintly.
But that smile disappeared quickly.
She moved the probe in another direction.
Her brows furrowed slightly.
She enlarged the image on the screen.
Then she checked the date of my last period again.
After that, she looked at my medical file one more time.
“Mrs. Laura…” Her voice slowed. “When exactly did you say your husband had his vasectomy?”
A cold shiver ran down my spine.
“Two months ago.”
The doctor didn’t answer right away.
She pulled the screen closer.
The heartbeat was still sounding steadily.
But there was something else on the screen.
Something that made the doctor keep the probe completely still, her expression turning entirely serious.
“What’s wrong?” I tried to sit up, my heart pounding. “Is my baby okay?”
The doctor lowered her voice.
“The baby is fine. But I need you to listen to me calmly.”
At that exact moment, the door to the examination room was suddenly pushed open.
Diego walked in without permission

Paula followed right behind him.
“Perfect,” Diego said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Now the doctor can finally tell me exactly how many weeks along another man’s child is.”
Dr. Salinas slowly turned her head to look at him.
She looked at Diego.
Then at Paula.
Then her eyes returned to the ultrasound screen.
Her voice rang out calm, but cold and sharp:
“Mr. Diego, before you continue insulting your wife… you need to take a very close look at what is appearing right here….

The examination room did not expand to accommodate the intrusion. Instead, the walls of sterile eggshell-white, lined with framed anatomical cross-sections of the human pelvis and plastic dispensers of antiseptic wipes, seemed to contract, trapping the four of us in a heavy, pressurized vacuum.48

The acoustic rhythm of the fetal heartbeat—*thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump*—continued to pulse from the console’s built-in speakers at a steady one hundred and fifty-four beats per minute. It was a clean, rapid cadence, indifferent to the three adults standing over the examination table.

Diego stood four feet from the edge of my paper-covered mattress. He had not taken off his dark wool overcoat; its shoulders were still damp from the light drizzle falling outside on 4th Avenue. His posture was rigid, chin jutted forward with the theatrical disdain he usually reserved for low-level junior contractors on his firm’s construction sites.

Beside him, Paula kept one manicured hand tucked lightly inside the elbow of his coat. She had combed her chestnut hair into a smooth, glossy bob, wearing a cream cashmere turtleneck that smelled faintly of expensive almond blossom perfume—the same fragrance she had worn six months ago when she sat at our dining table, complimenting the texture of my homemade focaccia.

“Excuse me,” Dr. Salinas said. Her hand did not move from the ultrasound transducer resting on the cold blue gel spread across my lower abdomen. Her voice carried the flat, unhurried weight of an obstetrician who had delivered four thousand infants and seen every iteration of domestic collapse. “This is an active clinical examination suite. Intruding upon a patient during an internal diagnostic scan is a direct violation of state medical privacy protocols. You will wait in the outer corridor.”

“I am her legal husband,” Diego spat, pulling his leather wallet from his interior coat pocket and slapping a laminated blue insurance card against the metal surface of the rolling medical cart. “I pay the premium on this policy. I am listed as the primary policyholder. And I have every right to document the medical timeline of an illegitimate  pregnancy before my legal counsel files our asset dissolution petition this afternoon.”

Paula offered Dr. Salinas a small, rehearsed smile—the kind designed to project diplomatic regret.

“We don’t want to create a scene, Doctor,” Paula said softly, her vocal register calibrated to sound entirely reasonable. “Diego has just been through an immense amount of psychological distress. We only need the crown-rump measurement and the exact gestational age stamped on the ultrasound report. We have an appointment with our family law mediator at two o’clock.”

“What am I supposed to be looking at, Laura?” Diego sneered, pointing a gloved finger at the central pixelated gray mass. “A six-week embryo? An eight-week fetus? Go ahead, Doctor. Tell me the gestational age. Tell me it’s seven weeks along—right in the middle of that weekend she spent in Chicago visiting her sister while I was recovering from bilateral vasectomy surgery with ice packs on our couch.”

Pregnancy& Maternity

Dr. Salinas did not look up at him. She adjusted the frequency knob on the console with her left hand, increasing the acoustic gain.

“Mr. Diego,” Dr. Salinas said, her eyes locked on the moving pixel field. “If your wife were seven weeks  pregnant, the gestational sac would measure approximately twenty-two millimeters, and we would be visualizing an early embryonic pole with rudimentary limb buds.”

Dr. Salinas tapped the trackball, drawing three digital calipers across the screen.

*BEEP.*

The digital overlay on the right-hand margin recalculated the biometric indices in bright yellow text:

ReproductiveHealthThe rhythmic *thump-thump, thump-thump* of the heartbeat seemed to drop an octave, vibrating through the metal frame of the bed.

Diego stared at the yellow letters.

His brow furrowed. His lips parted, then closed again.
